Description
Quasi-spherical gold nanoparticles (~10 nm) with a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surface, dispersed in water. The absorption peak is at ~525 nm, close to the 514 nm and 532 nm laser lines.
PVP holds on to gold less strongly than thiols do, so thiol-terminated molecules can displace it when you functionalise the particles, though the exchange is not always complete. Grove lists plasmonics, optical assay development, nanoparticle–molecule interaction studies, and catalysis and electrocatalysis as research uses.
Production: Grove colloids are made by physical deposition of metallic gold in the presence of the stabilising ligand, then dispersed in water. No gold salts, chemical reducing agents, CTAB or CTAC are used.
